Fiddling with uvesafb, splashy and SLIM

Good morning

Today, I configured uvesafb, splashy and SLIM for my Arch Linux laptop. The outcome is spectacular: I now have graphical login, a native 1280x800 splashscreen and more experience in configuring a pretty GNU/Linux desktop.

Now if only I would do be as enthusiastic about housekeeping... Back to my chores -.-

Fifth fleet out.

On the road again

...and it's time for me to write yet another blog entry.

I'll be on my way to Jyväskylä from Helsinki. The winter came too suddenly for us to be able to continue our work in Santahamina. Next week I'll be travelling to Niinisalo to finish a job that was left undone last time I visited there. Hopefully it'll be an educating week for me.

By the way, only 01000000 days left until I'm out of military service. 01000000. Get it? Don't? Good.

The new PC should arrive some time next week and I won't be there to receive it personally. Installing Arch Linux on it must wait until next weekend. I'll post the results of the 720p .mkv performance tests I'm conducting with it some time in the nearby future.

Until then, have a nice day

The morning that never came

It's still dark outside as I'm writing you this. I turned on my PC right after breakfast and gave a brief IRC lesson to a friend of mine. Today's battle plan is as follows:

1. Meet a superior at the barracks café for a briefing

2. Freeze in the cold for a few hours

3. Lunch and coffee

4. More freezing outside

5. End of freezing, dinner

Let it be known that I've been watching an awful lot of Richard Stallman related videos on Free Software and the GNU General Public License which I might share with you in the future. It's fair to say he has made me think about the choices I make while using my computer. To be "Open" and "Free" doesn't necessarily mean software is Free as in Beer, but more the likes of Freedom of Speech. To be able to modify software as I see fit for my purposes and to give that right to others along with the source code for the program. That's being a good neighbor.

Well that's enough rant for this morning. I'll update once I turn my pc on the next time.

(Re)shaping my habits

I've done some drastic changes in the past few days:

1.Installed Arch Linux on my laptop && started using Fluxbox again after a few years

2.Bought a new laptop (Acer Aspire One a150) installing Arch on that one too.

3.Installed Google Chrome unstable for linux (I've enjoyed it so far)

4.Beta testing Firefox 3.6(b1) ("Personas" is not worth the hype, believe me)

I also struggled with a pcmcia->usb Orinoco wireless 802.11b card on linux with little to no results. Usb is not my choice for network devices.

I'll try to update some random thoughts every time I boot up my machine with gnome-blog as I put it in my .xinitrc. Nothing further to add.
